My participation in Civil Disobedience: Poetry and Porn exhibition
Το καλοκαίρι του 2011 όταν ετοιμάζαμε με τον Γιώργο Τσιτιρίδη και τον Άρη Μπατσιούλα το πρώτο τεύχος του FAGAZINE, παίρναμε απο κοινού το ρίσκο να έχουμε για εξώφυλλο μια εικόνα που είχα ετοιμάσει λίγο καιρό πριν και πιθανότατα θα δημιουργούσε αντιδράσεις. Το μόνο που μας έννοιαζε, ήταν να κανουμε αυτό που πιστεύαμε, κόντρα σε τρέχουσες εμπορικές αντιλήψεις για το πως πρέπει να είναι ένα περιοδικό που θα αρέσει σε όλους. Θυμάμαι ότι η εικόνα αυτή και αγαπήθηκε και σόκαρε πολύ. Άλλοι αγκάλιασαν το τεύχος κι αλλοι ντρεπόντουσαν να το ξεφυλίσουν. Κι εμείς χαιρόμασταν σαν παιδιά γι αυτή την σκανδαλιά μας.
In the Summer of 2011 when, along with George Tsitiridis and Aris Batsioulas, we were working on the first issue of FAGAZINE, we jointly took the risk of using as front page an image I had recently produced that was likely to cause a commotion. The only thing we cared about was to do what we thought was needed; going against the grain of current commercial views of what a magazine ought to be like in order to be well liked by all. I recall that that image was lauded my many but also shocked many. Others embraced the issue and others were too embarrassed to even leaf through it. As for us, we reveled in the thrill of mischief, like naughty children do.
Όταν μετά απο δύο χρόνια είδα τυχαία στην Atopos Gallery το εξώφυλλο του 4ου τεύχος του La Vagina (ένα περιοδικο με ειρωνική ματιά πανω στο σεξ) από τον Γερμανό καλιτέχνη Boris Hoppek με την ευκαιρία της έκθεσής του Full Of Love στην Αθήνα το 2012, αμέσως έννοιωσα τη συγγένεια.
When two years later at Atopos Gallery I chanced upon the cover of the fourth issue of LAVAGINA (a magazine with an ironic take on sex) by German artist Boris Hoppek, prompted by an exhibition of his work in 2012 in Athens entitled Full Of Love, I immediately felt the affinity.
Λίγο αργότερα διαπιστώνω στο tumblr την προφανώς αντιγραφή-αναδημιουργία σε ακουαρέλα-υδατογραφία από τον Βραζιλιάνο καλιτέχνη Francisco Hurtz της εικόνας μου. Φυσικά χαρά και τιμή μου .
Soon after that I came across a recreation of my image in an aquarelle by Brazilian artist Francisco Hurtz, on tumblr. I was both honoured and overjoyed, obviously.
Πέρυσι απoφασίσαμε με τους αγαπημένους - μετά την γνωριμία μας- πλεον Κίμωνα Φωτιάδη και Esther Freifeld που έχουν την Artbeat Gallery στις Βρυξέλλες να συμπεριλάβουμε το έργο μου στην ατομική μου έκθεση ΑNDRESS-UNDRESS που φιλοξένησαν στον χώρο τους τον Νοέμβριο του 2015. Οι αντιδράσεις ήταν εξόχως ενδιαφέρουσες. Χαρακτηρίστηκε σκληρό, ρευστό, ευγενές, ποιητικό.

Then last year, after having met and embarked on a mutual fondness with Kimon Fotiades and Esther Freifeld, owners of the Artbeat Gallery in Brussels, we jointly decided to include the image in my solo exhibition there, entitled ΑNDRESS-UNDRESS, in November 2015. The reactions were singularly interesting. It was tagged everything from hard and fluid to noble and poetic.

Φέτος ένα χρόνο μετά μετά από πρόσκληση του φίλου Μενέλα να συμετάσχω στην underground queer ομαδική έκθεση Civil Disobedience: Poetry and Porn (Πολιτική Ανυπακοή: Ποίηση και Πορνογραφία) μαζί με εξαίρετους καλιτέχνες που οργάνωνε, αναρωτιόμουν τι είναι αυτό που θα μπορούσα να παρουσιάσω.
Η έκθεση αφορά την εξερεύνηση του δυϊσμού της ανθρώπινης φύσης σε σχέση με τον άξονα Πορνογραφία και Ποίηση. Μια συλλογιστική πάνω στις δυάδες: ποίηση-πορνογραφία, καρδιά-σώμα, έρωτας-σεξ, τέχνη-πορνογραφία, συναισθήματα-ένστικτα, λέξεις-εικόνες, εξευγενισμένο-χυδαίο.
Καθώς όλα αυτά στο κεφάλι μου είναι και μπλεγμένα και ελεύθερα, σκέφτηκα πως το συγκεκριμένο έργο θα ήταν ιδανικό να παρουσιαστεί εκεί.
Όσοι επισκεφτούν την έκθεση θα το δουν σε διασταση 50x70 inkjet εκτύπωση, επικόληση σε dibond.
Θα χαρώ να τα πούμε εκεί.
Now, a year after my friend’s Menelas’ invitation to take part in the underground queer group exhibition he’d be organizing, Civil Disobedience: Poetry and Porn along with other select artists, I wondered what it was that I might present.
The exhibition explores the duality of human nature in relation to the axis between Pornography and Poetry. A syllogism on dualities: poetry – pornography, heart – body, love-making – sex, art – pornography, feelings – instincts, words – images, refined – vulgar.
Considering all these are tangled and free-flowing in my mind, I thought this was the ideal piece to offer.
Those who visit the exhibition will see it in a 50x70cm inkjet print, mounted on dibond.
It will give me great joy to meet with you there.
